In our last trip to Argentina, I was looking to buy a cezve (a copper pot for making Turkish Coffee), when my cousin remembered she had an extra one that used to be in the store years ago.
She found it and gave it to me (the picture on the left).
What is so special about it?
There is so much family history in this pot: When we were teenagers, both my brother Raul and I worked at a wholesale clothing store in the Jewish-Arab quarter in Buenos Aires. The owner, who later on became our cousin by marriage, was from the Levant, and many times we -especially my brother- prepared coffee for him and guests on this coffee pot.
So, when, my cousin remembered it and gave it to me, we were sort of catapulted back in time to those years, many years ago, and we reminisced of those times, realizing how much of our history growing up and working and studying, could be in some ways represented or somewhat linked to this cezve.
But then, after arriving back in the United States, and after cleaning it and making the first cup of coffee -did I mention I love coffee? And I surely have a taste for Turkish Coffee with some baklava on the side! – I started thinking, that there was not only historic value in this pot, but also present enjoyment making coffee today in it.
There is still life in the pot.
As I pondered about it, the Holy Spirit came into the picture and pointed out that it is like this with our lives: We do have a history -sometimes good memories, sometimes complicated times, even frustrating failures, and what not- but we still have life ahead, and good coffee -good experiences- are still available in our lives.
We can just look at the pot that is our life and only remember what it was, or what could have been, or bring up the dreams we never saw come true; or maybe just feel a warm feeling when we think of good times, when we were still hopeful and felt full of life.
However, whether the above is a history of achievements, or failures, or painful times, or friendship and family, we must also take into account that we -like my cezve pot- have life left in us, and there is so much more that we could do, achieve, and enjoy.
I want to encourage you today, to allow the Holy Spirit to use you like the pot in my picture of words, fill you with the goodness of life, bring you to a ‘boil’ that will release a wonderful aroma, and then pour of that life in the cup of our daily walk this side of eternity.
There is so much more in us than just history to remember or reminisce on. Do not stop at the past: Pour out the coffee of your life in Jesus. Be blessed and become a blessing to many.
That is the essence of a revived life.
