THE CHURCH PRAYED OVER A BAG OF SOIL

I arrived in church late that night, the service had been going on for some time, so I almost missed this strange prayer time over a bag at the altar.

If you are like me, at first you will think a bit of this, whether it is Biblical or what? But, also if you are like me, your mind will go browsing your Bible knowledge, and you will find the strange things that Elisha, did, and Elijah, not to mention Ezekiel, and even Jesus Himself when He made mud and put it on a blind man’s eyes, or spit on the tongue of a mute guy?

But when the Holy Spirit stirs us up to take a step forward in faith, we better follow.

Our church had sent missionaries to the north of Argentina, to work within a reservation. As it happened -mostly in the 1800, the campaigns of conquest had driven the native peoples -or first peoples as we called them today- to the extreme south of the extreme north.

The government had very graciously created “reservations” for the native peoples. Unfortunately for them, the land was never the best, actually the worst possible, as it usually happens when governments intervene.

Our missionaries had taken food, medicines, clothing, and among the rest of the supplies, they took seed -an assortment of food seeds- to plant and produce food. The people at the reservation were most grateful for the help, and the provisions, but nearly laughed at the idea of seeds.

They said, the land the government has given us is barren, nothing can be grown in this place.

After some time, prompted by the Holy Spirit, some of the missionaries flew back to Buenos Aires, and brought a bag with earth to our church. And this was the strange prayer time I witnessed when I came in that night. The church extended their hands while the team laid hands on that white grocery store bag with soil from the barren land.

Next, the bag was flown back to the reservation, and upon arrival, the missionaries explained to the people at the reservation what they had done, and what they were planning to do: Spread the soil that has been prayed over with laying on of hands on it, over the barren place. So, they did.

Then they worked together to plow and sow the seed.

A few months later, the missionaries were back in our church, this time it was not a bag of barren soil, what they brought and put at the altar, was a testimony to God power and His will to bless when we are ready to spread the love of Jesus, and make Jesus known to the last confines of the earth.

What was not on the altar, was a big basket with fruits from the once barren land!
